Replace DIM? Cost /Options?

I posted a few days ago re> my wife`s 03 XC70 & how all the instrument lights, including fuel guage, speedo, etc went off while she was driving to work. They came back on but the SRS service urgent message came on as well.
I`ve done some research into this problem, notably on VolvoXC.com but really haven`t come with much other than it`s an expensive repair.
Has anybody else had this problem, can`t imagine that it`s an infrequent problem.
Maybe I have to suck it up & lay out the big bucks but I`d like as much info as possible befor taking that route.
