Oil Leak 850

I recently installed a new cam position sensor and seal. Today the car wouldn't start and there was oil leaking from the seal and the distributor cap was full of oil as well. Obviously, I did not replace the seal correctly behind the cam position sensor. How did the oil get into the distributor cap? Any ideas on how it got there and any tips on how to replace the cam seal behind the position sensor. Are the 2 related or does each need a new seal? Please let me know if you can help me out.
