2000 XC V70 slight transmission noise V70-XC70 2000

We've noticed a slight noise coming from the transmission when it's either in Drive or Reverse. If it's on neutral, there's no noise and very quiet. Any ideas what might be causing that?

Also on a different question, we took Volvo into Volvo Dealership for inspection and were told that cat converter was bad and that it was triggering "check engine" light inside cabin. I've read in a few forums that the O2 sensors usually are the ones that go bad instead of cat converter. Help! I looked at pricing online for O2 sensors and seems they run approx 190 for front and rear O2 sensors. Are there alternatives out there?
