Greetings,
I've an 85 244 and a 95 855 - both non-turbo. Consensus on the 240 site was to just toss the air box stat when (not if) it failed and secure the cool air flap open and the hot air flap closed so the AMM wouldn't fry. I did this on the 244.
I checked my 855's air box yesterday and its stat had failed so the box was receiving only hot air via the duct work from the exhaust manifold. The AMM fortunately hadn't been fried yet. I remedied that by holding the cool air flap open against the box and securing it with a bolt/nut. With the cool flap open the hot flap on the other end has to close.
Q. Why were these systems made to fail in the hot air only mode?
Q. Have others with 850s found their stats have failed? What was your fix?
Stay cool,
Dukester
