Brake Failure-Complete loss of pedal-Pittsburgh 850

My well maintained 1996 850 lost all pedal last night we are lucky to be alive!
It happened on a flat road as I was coasting to a stop. If any of you are familure with Pittsburgh, it is mostly steep grades and any other location would have been a disaster. Total and complete loss of brakes, pedal went straight to the floor!! even after a couple of panic pumps it hardly would stop.
It seems to be from under the master cylinder area, as AAA tow truck was putting it up I was able to see that it was not leaking from a wheel, that it is comming from under the hood. I am away from home and only repair may be volvo dealership $$. Has anyone else had this happen? We recently switched to 850 from RWD, I can't belive this could happen to a rust free well maintained volvo. I guess it was not my time to go, this could have been really bad.
It was like something that would happen in my 122, not a modern car.
