Seat stains S40-V40 2001

I've got an '01 S40 with cloth seats (its a relatively wear resistant fabric but I think its not the so-called "T-tec" fabric). They have horrible water stains from me doing simple things like opening the door in the rain. The staining was aggravated when I tried to use auto upholstery cleaner to clean them off.

It sounds like this might be a common problem with these types of cloth seats. Does anyone have recommendations on how to clean them and/or treat them to prevent further staining? Perhaps using Scotchguard?
