Hi
I’ve been a long time old Volvo mechanic and am attempting to a timing belt on my 01 V70 t5. The obvious mistake is in the vvt setup. A Volvo mechanic told me (but rather informally) that if you rotate the engine clockwise ¼ turn (cams) past top dead center and then rotate the engine CCW back to TDC then the cam with the VVT is in the correct position to place the belt on. My problem is that when I do this (or what scares me) is that the mechanical tensioner is in a funny position. Before I did this I took note that the mechanical tensioner and it was at the 70 degree or 20 degrees C mark. Also there was some slop in the belt when I rotated the engine CCW. Is this normal? ..I will not take the belt off unless I’m sure I’ll get it right. Until then I have to drive my 59 544.
Thanks Joe
