wife went out thurs nite, got half way there and 850 died!!!!! DEAD ON THE ROAD. so i went up to rescue her. got in it and it hit like it wanted to start but then just cranked. waited a bit and it did it again. i looked at the gas gauge and it wasnt low enough to kick on the light but i figured since its so low light might not be workin. got a gas can(was right in front of K MART and got 2 gallons of gas....dumped it in still no go.
called tow truck, and was waitin on them(bout 40 min)so i decided to try it again........IT STARTED!!!! i sat there runnin it and drove it around the lot a few times, couple times it wanted to quit but didnt. so i told wife follow me ,and i was gona make a run for the house!!!!(3-4 miles). i got to the corner of our street, has a gas station pulled in and added 20 bucks. got in it fired it up and got home. called the tow company and said we got it runnin sorry bout the call.
so next day wife took truck to work, i get to WRENCH on her 850.
did i tell ya we have had this car for little over 4 yrs, and got it with 124k now has 170k...AND....no really big problems. in all that time. we got it and couldnt figure out when the timming belt had been changed. sooooooooo at 130k we took to a local shop, for timming belt and water pump(wasnt a problem but since they was in there, replacement was preventitive)while they had it they saw the radiator was cracked(plastic end cap crap)and put in a new rad. all this was $800. so no other problems till bout a yr later and i replaced left drive shaft, and one tie rod end. i did the brake pads soon after, did i tell you HOW EASY IT IS TO CHANGE PADS ON THIS CARS? well it took less then 30 min to do the whole job ....AND THAT INCLUDED JACKING AND SETTIN STANDS!!!
WELL back to now, i figured it might be fuel filter(since i never changed it, and i doubt it had been changed since somewhere prior to 100k!!!!! while i had it here, i could do plugs, since those was changed when the radiator/timming belt was done(3 yrs ago). and since i was in there...i looked at the DIST CAP & ROTOR could use a renew too.
came in to computer and since i did NAPA PARTS for 15 yrs. i went to NAPAONLINE.COM to see what all this was gona cost me. i found the fule filter part # FIL 3596, $15.49. ROTOR, EP 467 $18.63, DIST CAP EP465 $31.76 now you may not get same price as iam know in the store and let em know i used to be an EMPLOYEE... so i aint gona get LIST PRICE!!!
LIST price on same items is $34, $43, $72 !!!!!!!!!
well i got numbers and called NAPA store near me got my freind on the counter and give him info they DELIVERED to the house.
well it was on the way, i pulled pulled plugs(cant get the wrong wire on the wrong plug) took out the air filter box, so i can get to cap and rotor.
pulle them off(to easy really 3 allen screws and cap is off, 3 more screws and rotor is off)10 min at most. bout this time driver shows up with parts, i look at what i got in my hand against what he brung(little trick i learned way back when)YEP all looks alike)))))))))payed the man and opened the plug box...BOSCHE
well i figure i need my GAP TOOL.. nope...plugs are new type NO GAP!!! ok little anti sieze on the threads and plop, plop... there in, put all the wires back on. now to install cap and rotor....all of 5 minutes.....and thats with pullin off the spark plug wires on old and puttin on new.
ok....put the air filter box back in and AMM and jump in it and bam..fires right up......LIKE A NEW ONE!!!!!!
now on to the fuel filter....WHOLE NEW EXPERIANCE HERE....i jack up right side, get under it and filter is right under right rear door...ACCESSABLE and one 12mm nut holdin it. take it loose and then..heres the wild thing to me...NO NUTS OR CLAMPS....has a slide fittin you pull back, and apply a little pressure with pry bar..AND THE FUEL LINES POP OFF!!!! to put on new filter you SLIDE BACK ONTO END of new filter AND PUSH REALLY HARD........thats it!!!! ITS A LEAKPROOF CONNECTION!~!!!! to frickin easy......
so i took it down the road for a couple miles and its runnin like a new one...
DID I SAY IAM IMPRESSED WITH OUR 1995 170K, 4 YR owners of this 850???? that has been rear ended 3 times...YEP got nailed 3 times to....only 1 time really bad....$3000 repair. oh and its still tight no water leaks or air leaks.....
back when wife decided to but it.....i was sceptical of any front driver....
well i can say I WAS WRONG.....
