Radio/CD player display failure XC90 2003

The central console-mounted radio/CD changer display has suddenly stopped working on my 03 XC90 D5. Just gone blank. It's annoying more than anything as you can't see which radio station you're on or which CD is playing. My local mechanic advises that this is a fairly common problem - he cites three in the last three months. Does anyone know why it happens and what I can do about it? Any advice would be welcome, as a loval Volvo dealer wants to relieve me of £800 to put it right!
