odometer failure diagnosis: gear or ABS? 850

I have search and read that odometer failures ( 1997 850 GLT at 135,000 miles) might be due to the gear failure or might be the ABSunit. I replaced the abs unit at about 80,000 miles. The odometer was working intermittently until a few weeks ago but stopped completely the last time I reset the trip mileage. Now the trip and odometer don't move at all. Thankfully the ABS light is not on, although it did flash on briefly a few weeks ago but hasn't since.

How can I tell if a gear repair is the way to go?
