I was driving home from visiting the in-laws today. After driving for a bit over an hour on country roads, we made a second rest stop. I was about to accelerate from 80 km/hour to the posted limit of 90 km/hour, when my 1993 Volvo 850 sedan with automatic transmission started to slow down. More gas didn't help. All (or maybe only most) of the idiot lights came on, so I pulled onto the shoulder. The engine died by the time I came to a stop. I never noticed any loss of power steering. Since this was a small country road/highway, I was a bit panicked and forgot to notice exactly which idiot lights were on. It was a hot day. Temperature about 30 deg C (86 F). After about 10 minutes I tried starting the car and it worked just fine.
My husband says it seemed like it might have been vapour lock. I did a search for power loss here on the Brickboard, and the most common fix for power loss seems to be to change the fuel pump relay. The only thing that was any different from other trips is that the car had been hosed down (to get rid of a coating of pollen) before we headed home and the fact that we took the scenic route instead of the the autoroute.
Any insight?
