I had some sort of catastrophic failure in the driveline tonight as I was waiting to pull out of the gas station. Sitting motionless, first gear engaged and clutch pedal depressed, I felt a snap (like something letting loose) through the clutch pedal. Then nothing. Pedal feels fine, but the car doesn't move, or the engine even react when any gear is selected without touching the clutch. Also, transmission fluid (clean looking) is pouring slowly onto the ground.
I had the car towed to a friends place (he's got a garage, I do not). I've not yet had a chance to poke and prod in an attempt to diagnose. The very sudden and complete lack of go-power would indicate to me that something in the transmission/differential/driveshafts sheared, but the clutch was engaged at the time - essentially disconnected from the engine and transmitting no torque (also no odd noises). The hydraulic clutch feels normal and actuates the rod, so I'm then inclined to say the clutch is just totally coated with fluid and that's why the car won't go. Which would mean, presumably, that the input seal of the transmission suddenly let go in a big way. That also doesn't seem likely to me as the lack of power tranmission was so sudden and there was really no stress on the driveaxle.
Some history: Car is '95 854 w/5sp trans and 154K miles. In the late Fall I replaced a CV boot on the drivers side and replaced tranny fluid and output seal. Last week I replaced the entire passenger side axle after another CV boot failed. Was no leakage from output seal as of Tuesday.
Anybody care to wager a guess as to what failed? I will be digging into it Friday after work and this weekend. I just hope I don't end up having to source another tranmission.
Thanks for your thoughts.
