Wanted to report in regarding the rear main seal replacement which I completed approximately 3 weeks ago. Did not want to report sooner as I was worried about an immediate possible leak. The car has now been driven quite a few miles with no problems.
This I did completely myself in an 8' garage. Did buy two special Volvo tools which I would not be without, especially the unit which holds the transmission. The other tool grabs the engine so it can be hoisted. You do also need a tool to hold the engine up and in this case it fits as a bridge between the fenders. I used instructions from VADIS, ALLDATA, Chiltons and some from the 850 site as suggested by MIJ. The VADIS is best hands down, but all contribute. I studied and psyched myself up for this one and it did take a long time as I was in no hurry.
Couple of suggestion in my experience: remove the fan and shroud so you can access the starter and other parts more easily. Break loose the axel nut on the driver side one of the first things otherwise it can be a problem later on when everything is spinning freely. Replace not only the rear main seal but also both axel seals and the torque converter seal----it will never be easier. Now is a good time to clean things thoroughly and put new coverings on the wire harnesses. Good time to replace hoses if needed too---you can get at things.
The transmission holder or tool from Volvo I mounted on an 18 X 18 X 1/4 inch steel plate. This gives it stability when you take it off. I had the car on two jack stands in front and used to floor jacks to lift and lower subframe. Some tilting of the transmission tool is necessary as the transmission comes off at an angle. The tilting I accomplished with some scrap 2 X 4's .
Anyway, it was a challenge. Used genuine Volvo parts and the parts were inexpensive. Tools the most expensive followed by the Mobil 1 transmission fluid.
Hope it stays dry!
