causes for not shifting? 850

My expertise is 140 series and older Volvo's, so my girlfriends '94 850 Turbowagon has me a bit perplexed. Since the weather has turned cold, almost every time it starts up first thing in the morning it has problems shifting. The only code the computer gives is "incorrect gear ratio" and that it getting stuck in second. Its not slipping, it just won't shift. Sometimes turning the car off and then on again seems to help OR jabbing the accelerator. Its never actually done it while I'm driving the car, so I'm going off of what she's told me. One friend said his 98 S70 was doing something similar, and it turned out to be the pins where the wiring harness were broken in the circuit board itself and causing wierd things to happen. Another friend suggested that it might be a problem with the wheel speed sensors. Does this car use the ABS sensors to tell the trans when to shift? She also said it had been doing this when she first bought the car back in April of this year, but she took it to have the trans flushed, and it seemed to be cured until this fall when it started getting cold. Any ideas? I'm kinda lost with these newer cars. :)
