erratic starting V70-XC70 2000

The ETC was replaced (free) by local Volvo dlr. and related updated programing downloaded about a year ago. The work was occasioned by erratic starting and that problem continues and seems to be worsening. Typically, this is what happens, after repeated (2-20+) attempts it starts, runs completely normally and next time may start right up or not. However, it may go days without the problem, and then, just when you think it was something temporary it happens again. Hot or cold makes no difference. I can determine no pattern to this. No engine light, so apparently no code for Volvo dlr. to work with. Wife has been stranded several times and has about had it. Any ideas?-
