850 heater blower problems - new motor no power?

Interesting problem - a week ago my heater blower quit (had made a noise or two in the past month) and suddenly last Monday, the fan failed and I got some smoke out of the heater/ac control unit - not good. Pulled fuse and stopped the car. With luck, I have an identical 93 parts car - so I had another entire heater control unit to stick in - opened up the smokey one and found a burnt reistor flopping around. Hmmmmm. Rathter than put in a used motor from my parts car, I bought a new Bosch motor (sans cage) at Eeuropean and decided to swap the cage since I had an old unit from my parts car. Good so far. Switched the cage, got the new motor all together and put in. Before starting the car, I thought, what if the blower motor resistor unit was bad and that caused the meltdown of the fried heater control unit - did not want to fry a new blower motor (and the old one was rough once I got it out, but had worked up until the meltdown). I swapped the blower resistor unit (right next to blower motor) with the one from my parts car.

Everything is back in and I have power to the control unit (lights up etc) but I now have no response to the new blower motor - nothing. Could the blower resister cause the new blower not to work??? At this point, I am going to swap the old blower resistor back in the car tomorrow and see if if will work. Checked the fuses and no problems there. Or was there other damage when I had the previous meltdown (that control unit is trashed so I can't compare it!

Any ideas on why I have no blower motor function??? I plan to check all my connections again tomorrow. I had not put the glove box back on - just have to remove the knee bolster again to start over - sort of stumped??? At least this is easier than taking out a 240 blower motor - but I really can't figure out what I could have done wrong????
