I have a 2001 XC, it has been a good car. It is approaching 70K miles so I was considering doing a transmission flush and fluid replacement. I called the dealer, they said $300 - $375, because it has synthetic fluid. I did not go for it, this sounds too expensive to me. I called my local transmission repair specialist and asked them what they charge. The said typically it is $100 to $120 but if they have to go to Volvo for the fluid they would have to charge me the difference. The the technician asked why I want to change the fluid, I said because it has 70K miles on it. He said unless I am having a problem or the fluid looks dirty, dark, or smells bad, they do not recommend changing the fluid regardless of the mileage. What is the general opinion out there, should I or should I not do a transmission fluid change? The warranty has expired so that is not a consideration. Thanks, Fred J.
