poor gas mileage 850

I thought it was the vent seals on the gas tank, but the smell of gas fumes continue after the gas tank repairs were made. the smell seems to be coming from the front end of the car and only when the car is in gear and moving. Mileage is poor compared to my last 850. The air filter is new. Can a bad catilited converter lead to poor mileage, becuase that is one thing i think is bad on this car. the second thing we are considering could be the fuel injector is bad? Unlike my last 850, we dont have the rundown of what the previous owner did, unifortunately...any help will be appreciated on this one.. the car is 5-speed, but ti doubt that has anything to do with this problem.
