Strut mount condition questions 850

I've got the infamous 850 clunk, and am replacing the obviously bad sway bar end links. I understand the strut mounts could also create a clunk, and notice there is an obvious space ( 1/4"+/-) between the "special washer" (just below the nut on the end of the strut, and visable from under the hood) and the top of the mount. Is this an indication that the mount has failed, or is it normal?
