whir when starting from dead stop in first gear 850 1996

Hi all,

96 850 wagon with 95k and 5-speed manual. Occasionally when starting from a stop, I hear a loud-ish "whirring" noise coming from somewhere (clutch?). Usually I can control this from happening, and it only happens from a stop or from just barely creeping along. It goes away after a few seconds. I think it's most noticeable on a fairly quick start. So is my clutch failing? Is this something that needs to be fixed, or do I just live with an interesting noise?
