I would like to know if anyone has used their XC70 to tow a dual-axle car trailer? I currently use a small utility trailer, but need something more substantial to carry a PV444 to the body shop and possibly pick up a 164-E.
My Volvo hitch has the following specifications:
Make: Brink (OEM for Volvo)
Maximum trailer weight: 1500 lbs (1650)
Maximum towable weight: 3300 lbs (with brakes & 2" ball, 2000 with 1 7/8" ball)
Maximum tongue weight: 110 lbs
with electric brakes: 165 lbs (165)
Class 2
(The 2004 XC70 manual values are in brackets)
I have an opportunity to buy a 16 foot, dual-axle trailer, with electric brakes on one axle. The weight of the trailer is 1784 lbs. and uses a 2 3/16" ball. The seller does have what he calls an "equalizer" and has said that a car can be placed further back on the trailer, to lessen the tongue weight.
Does this trailer exceed the limitations on my XC70 hitch? My trips will be less than 100 miles on secondary roads. Are there any other considerations or questions I should ask the owner?
