Control Arm/ Tie Rod ends 850 1996

After bouncing around this board with my issues, I've decided that I need to replace a control arm (if not both) and a tie rod (if not both) on my 110k mile 850. Before I purchase the parts from ipd (seem to be better quality than eeuroparts ScanTech), my question is this:

How can I tell which side I need to replace for these two parts, or is it customary to just do both sides at the same time? Should I be poking/wiggling something to see which I need to take care of? How do I tell if the tie rod ends need to be replaced? Any help would be great.

Also, once I've determined which side(s) and which part(s) to replace, what would you all recommend as the best step-by-step guide to complete this (these) job(s)? I've been looking around here and have found bits and pieces (like torque specs, etc) but what I'm really looking for is a guide, along with a list of tools needed. Alas, Bay13 doesn't cover this. I suppose I should just buy a Haynes...?

Thanks!
