odometer 850 1994

Recently the dealer removed the dash to repair the A/C.
Shortly after the repair was complete we noticed the odometer stopped working. No problem with the speedometer.
The car was brought back to the dealer who said the odometer is broken- no relationship to the fact that the dash was removed. They want $300+ to replacethe odometer.

Any thoughts? Did the dealer screw something up when the dash was laying open?
