Storing a used fuel pump 850 1997

Have read numerous accounts of failed fuel pumps. Always miles and miles from home. Have considered going to a wrecking yard and scoring one from a 97 wreck. They cost on the plus side of $200 by quite a bit when you buy a new one from Volvo. Any problems with getting a used one and carrying it around in the trunk? After the pump has been exposed to gas, does anything dry out when it's removed? I would definitely switch out the pump with the one in the car to make sure it is working before I stored it, but I don't know whether this would be wise or not. Any advice or comments much appreciated. Dick
