DIY timing belt replacement? S40-V40

Dealer wants $800 to replace timing belt? Why so expensive? Is it a DIY? What else should be replaced during this time? Water pump?

Thanks,
David

    DIY timing belt replacement? S40-V40

The S40 belts are a bit more of a nightmare than the other front wheel drive cars. Make sure that you hang a new tensioner while you are in there. I had a car come in this week that was 9K overdue for the belt when his tensioner exploded. It is going to run him somewhere in the area of $3500.00 to straighten it out. The dealer is asking for a hefty sum but that sum pales in comparison to what it will cost to straighten it out should you grenade it. I would hang a new water pump and tensioner while you are in there, the pump can be considered to be optional at that point but the tensioner is a must.

9k over. What was the mileage? I've seen various numbers for timing belt replacement.
      Thanks.

What is the timing belt replacement interval on the S/V40?

          Thanks

There are 2 different belts. One has a wider belt, and gets replaced first tiem at 120 000km. The other has a narrow belt and gets replaced at I think 60 000 or 80 000km. I believe the US got only one of the 2 (the S40 was launche 1996, US got it only 1999 after major changes). I think it has to do with the older engine being 16 valve and the newer one 20 valve. Sorry for no exact details, got my 1998 S40 only the other day. Still searching for a cheap workshop manual...

Try the Brit. Hanynes manual...(IPD sells them) believe it's the only real manual unless you can get your hands on a VADIS disc (For Volvo dealers)...sometimes they sell these on eBay.

I have one of the Brit. Haynes. It works for my 2000 (which, by the way, I'm in the middle of replacing the timing belt). I'm looking at subscribing to the Volvo website whereby you can download the actual Volvo of America manuals. And yes, replacing these belts is a real pain compared to 240 stuff. You actually have to remove one of the motor mounts.
