Replacing Brake Hoses, Front Calipers on 850 850

I plan to replace front calipers and want to replace the brake hoses while doing this. I always check this board first before doing any job.

My 95 Volvo 850 has 143K mikes on it, and the hoses do have cracks in them. They are on the surface, and the inner tube is probably OK, but I would rather see new hoses there.

Is there any trick or any difficulty in unscrewing/screwing in hoses? Which side goes first? Do I use any sealant? How do I make sure that the hose is aligned and is not twisted after the job is done? Any advise is appreciated.

Yuri

Replacing Brake Hoses, Front Calipers on 850 850

    Hi Yuri,

I replaced the front brake hoses on my '95 855 with 153K on it the first week of August. The hose to solid brake line was the worst part as the other reply indicates. I had to get a hand held propane torch and heat up the fittings to get them apart even though I sprayed WD-40 on them a couple of times prior to working on them.
The wrench size is 11mm for the brake line side, a small pair of vise grips came in handy beacuse even with brake line wrenches I was rounding off the nut before I stoppped and put the heat on it. This is not for the squemish, the amount of heat that I had to put on this to get it loose caused the brake fluid to vaporize and smoke when it did come loose that it made me quickly remeber of where the nearsest fire exstinguisher was! If you use a torch be sure to move the antilock brake wire from the top of the caliper out of the way so as to not burn it up. it runs along the brake line by the frame. I also bled alot of fuid out of the bleed fitting after the new hose was on to get all of the overheated fluid out of the system.

Replacing Brake Hoses, Front Calipers on 850 850

I did this and found the fitting of the brake hose to the solid brake line at the body was VERY tight. I ended up taking it to a pro mechanic who removed it because I could not. I suggest putting on lots of a rust penetrant solvent like "Liquid Wrench" (stronger than WD40) ahead of time. The flare nut is either 7/16 inch or 11 mm in size. These are very close. Purchase a good brake line or flare nut wrench which will fit this, and work patiently so as not to round the flare nut. Otherwise you may need to have a new piece of solid brake line put in. You will need a backup wrench to hold the brake hose fitting in place while you loosen the flare nut. I did not have any trouble with the end of the brake hose at the caliper.

When opening up the brake system I have tried to avoid getting any air in so I would not have to bleed the system completely. You will not have to keep the system open for very long if you have everything ready. You can remove the line from the caliper, plug its end and then install the caliper. You can prefill the caliper with fluid. I found that fluid would flow through by gravity. Just replenish the fluid in the master cylinder before it runs very low.

However, if the brake fluid has not been replaced for several years and is not clean, you should replace all of it.
