wiper arm 850

The wiper blade on the driver's side only wipes a little over half of the way that it should. I tried to tighten the bolt on the bottom of the arm, down by the firewall, but it didn't help. Is there any other fixes for them or do i just have to get a new one?

The fix is to file off the stops on the aluminum portion of the wiper arm. These stops are preventing the arm from coming in close enough to the windshield to allow the wiper to maintain full contact. A photo depicting the fix, along with a brief explanation is located at the following URL. I did this fix over three years ago, and my wiper is still working fine.

Mine did that to me last winter after a snow storm - no good and dangerous. I bent the wiper arm on the bench and it worked again. However, this may not last for a long time. I bought a new one from dealer for less than $50. At least the new arm will last for another 9 years.

There's a fix at volvospeed, just remember to re-check the nut on the wiper arm after bending the arm as it may come loose.

I have had some luck bending the steel portion of the wiper arm. I think that it is safer than bending alloy and moves the pivot of the arm closer to the glass.

Ben--take the arm off if you haven't already, and reposition it slightly, just a little bit above or below the little white positioning spots in your windshield where the blade should rest. If the blade still continues to only wipe clean half the windshield, then you know the arm is bent. I wouldn't buy a new one. Go to a wrecking yard and score one. Very few people buy them, and almost every wreck I looked at had a pair. While you're there, look over the disassembled 850 interiors and exteriors and familiarize yourself with your car some more. There are always plastic fasteners for holding trim onto the interior that are forever breaking, rubber gromets disappearing, vacuum line elbows, etc. The list is endless of small things you can score at a wrecking yard for somewhere down the road. Another option I did is if you have a vice is to gently caress it straight again and rain-x. Not 100% effective but it is free if you have a vice and extra rain-x.
