Fuel Smell - Fuel Pump Gasket 850

1995 Volvo 850 wagon

Noticed a strong fuel smell when we filled the other day and noticed gas dripping off the back of the fuel tank on the passenger side. The gas stopped dripping shortly after fillup. I took the acces cover off the fuel pump and looked around and did not see anything obvious. I diconnected the vapor hose that leads to the filler neck to inspect for holes. None. When I blew in the hose, I could hear a leak and after further inspection, it seems to be coming from around the fuel pump gasket. Anyone have any experience with this, can you buy just a fuel pump gasket? Thanks

Best I can tell from Vadis is the there is a "dry" gasket, part # 3531426 and there is a rubber seal...both lubricated on the outside with a layer of vaseline (thick for the dry gasket and thin for the rubber one), and then the nut on the fuel pump fitting (looks like a pretty large threaded "ring" of sorts with ridges on it) is tightened to 40Nm or 29.5 Lb. Ft. I hope this helps. You might just try tightening it up and see if this gets rid of the leak.

I am aware of the recall and have talked to the dealer. As explained by them, the recall has to do with the attachment points for the exhaust heat shield on the drivers side of the car. The leak I have is around the fuel pump gasket.

There is a recall on the 850 gas tanks...call your dealer and ask them about it. What you're describing sounds just like the reason for the recall. There is potential danger of explosion due to the leak.
