AC Leak on 98 S70 S70

I have a 98 S70 with 170,000 miles. The AC was not working. My mechanic could not find a leak and recharged the AC. It worked for 2 days and is blowing warm air again. Obviously a leak somewhere. What areas are most prone for a leak?

I'm having the same problem with our 98 S70. Filling with freon and two and a half days later the system is blowing out hot air. Refilled with freon and same thing. The system has had dye added to it and we will be bringing it back to see if they can "see" something. Did you end up replacing the evaporator? I would love to hear more specifics from anyone if they have experienced this type of problem and what they did to resolve it. Thanks.

Thanks for all the input. I do think it is the evaporator. Turns out to be an expensive job to replace. A service place( not a Volvo dealer) that specializes in Volvo repair, says the part is $300 and takes 7 hours of labor! The dash has to be removed. Probably end up costing close to $800. They did say that a lot of evaporators on 850's fail, but very few on S70s. So perhaps it is something else.

S70's are not that much different than 850's and with that many miles on your car I would think that's it. The difference with S70 is that it has a cabin filter which helps gunk from getting in the fan...thus the whole A/C system is more effecient and the Evap. going bad takes longer. Actually $800 is a GREAT deal for this work...just make sure these guys know what they're doing.

I'm 99.9% sure it's the evaporator. The reason he can't find the leak even with dye is because the evap. is way up under the dash and drains out from a tube under the car. Do really see the dye, a small black light on the end of a stick is about the only way.

Ed, the evaporator core (in the dash) is the usual culprit.
