Mysterious clunking noise under dash driver's side--what could it be? 850

I own two 97 wagons. Last spring I noticed a kind of clunking/clicking sound coming from under the dash seemingly around the window post from my GLT. I thought it was something come loose in one of the dash air vents but could never find anything. Taking off the bolster and looking up under the dash only revealed the standard snarl of wiring you can't see through.

But just the other day my 97R wagon started making the same sounds. This time I noticed it occurred when I went around a corner on a twisty road. Turn right--clunk. Turn left--clunk. Make two right hand or two left turns and no clunk on the second turn. It seems something is swinging loose like a pendulum, but what I could be I have no idea.

My friend drives a 96T wagon, and now his is starting to make the same mysterious clunking sound--almost like the sound the door locks make when you hit the lock switch on the dash, but not nearly so loud. Any ideas? Dick

Hey rt...

A couple thoughts...

Have you tried blowing compressed air both ways through the ducts? Maybe something sliding around in there? Did you shine a flashlight into all the openings in the cowling? Do you often park/work in the shade under trees?

Could very well be your swaybar links--sound is a bit non directional, definitely a clunk sound. A common issue with 850s. Part is $15 at FCP Groton and an easy repair.

Possibly spring seats. Push down on the front of the car with the hood open and look for any fore/aft or side/side movement of the top of the strut. Another dead give away is if there is no gap below the safety cap at the top of the assembly.
