siphoning sound from engine 850 1996

My engine makes a very noticeable sloshing/siphoning sound. The sound seems to be coming from the drivers side, near the firewall. The sound only occurs when the car is moving, not at idle. Could this be a symptom of a failed water pump? Thanks.

There's a pollution control air pump under the battery that can sometimes collect water. You can disconnect the plug and see if the sound goes away. Some folks have suggested drilling a hole in the housing to let any trapped water drain out.

Absolutely right according to my mechanic...remove the airpump to drain it as far as I know...the drill hole idea I don't agree with...there is a relatively inexpensive valve about the size of your fist in line with the air pump...should be replaced. Water in the pump can make it fail in cold weather=$600.

Even with a new secondary air pump control valve these air pumps have been known to collect water. I know first hand TWICE!!! Take a tip from someone who has been there and knows. Drain your pump, drill 1/8th inch sized holes on both sides of the lowest point of the air pump, and change your control valve. BTW, if you hear this noise any more often than when the car first starts up cold and for 2 or 3 minutes thereafter, it isn't the air pump....

I have a feeling that your noise is not this problem at all. You don't have a clogged up A/C evaporator drain line do you?
