It's a relatively straightforward job if you have the right tools and are confident in your mechanical abilities.

Bay 13 has excellent illustrated instructions.

Go to volvospeed.com and search the forums.

But IMHO- do not do this job unless you have the time, the ability, and enjoy working on your car. Don't do it just to save a few hundred dollars and risk a $3,000 engine repair.....

On Friday, Aug 5th, "vwstuart" posted a message titled "success on timing belt but one more round to go". Read it carefully, after you've visited the Volvospeed Bay 13 site. Pay particular attention to the responses about the idler and tensioner pulleys. Also consider the mileage on your car and think about the water pump while you have the thing apart... you get to the water pump easily when the timing belt is being replaced. You'll find that it's not a difficult job if you have the tools, but reading all the comments on the task ahead of time will save you a lot of grief. Good luck.

No real tricks to it. make sure the timing marks are lined up and you have a way to collapse the tensioner and keep it collapsed(a drill bit works great.
Rotate the engine a few revolutions by hand before you start it to make sure there is no interference.

thanks baneps and 4volvos. i guess i was just paranoid about causing engine damage somehow, but i guess that's not possible or likely, huh.

It is definitely possible to do engine damage, it is an interference engine. But if you are carefull and thorough, you can certainly do the replacement.

        Good Luck!
