Price of clutch and main seal including labor? 850

Looking at buying a 1995 5 speed non turbo with 175,000 miles as a beater car. Soon to need a clutch kit and may as well do main seal while its apart. What will I need to pay for a job like that? Anyone had it done? I assume there will be some other issues that arise...an axle seal here of there...lower motor mount...etc. Has anyone tackled this job themselves? Do you simply work under the drivers side wheel well or drop the subframe?

I've got a 93 5 speed...I had the main seal, clutch, and new transmission put in for 2100...so I'd figure around 1000-1300.

Hmm...i love telling people this...
I think I've recently hit the 250,000 mile marker...still running great after the new tranny.

WOW! That gives me great hope! I just rolled over 100,000 miles. What was the mileage when the clutch was replaced? I live in San Francisco, so the hills can be a bitch, but I'm hoping this clutch will last a good 50k more. . .

Well...the first clutch was done around 120 maybe? That's just a guess. I replaced the tranny and my main seal at around 230. The second clutch wasn't shot yet, but i figured since they had the tranny out and all, they might as well just put a new clutch in- i would have had to do it soon enough anyways.
I live in CT, and do A LOT of highway driving (as you can see). The clutches have been good to me so far. I'll tell ya, its amazing what regular maintainance on these cars can do for you...the only problem I'm having now is the malfunction of my climate control unit. The lights blink, and it is not functional...maybe a sensor issue?

Enjoy the car!!!

Figure $1200 (I think it's 10+ hours labor)- you have to pull the engine and tranny or drop the subframe and pull the tranny.

just had mine done in the UK..book labour is 8hours, though it took over ten as lots of bolts were almost seized. Try to get a fixed labour cost before you start. definitely also get the rear oil seal done as it's only a little extra time to do this and you need the clutch out to do it anyway.

My mechanic used a genuine Volvo clutch but the same day the mechanic had someone trying to sell them a cheaper version. Outward appearances they both looked the same, but inside the genuine Volvo kit used thicker components and had more wear lining. Make sure they dont use cheap pattern parts.

$1400 for the clutch here in San Francisco. Hopefully I have a few more miles to go.

854 GLT 1993 manual: 106,000 miles

Now a week later and my car is dripping oil like mad..looks like one of the oil seals got disturbed when they put everything back together....the mechanic has said he will have to strip it down and will redo the seals for free....
