Check engine liught V70-XC70 1998

Hi,
I'm new here. My son has a 1998 V70 AWD. It's been a good car so far but the check engine light has come on about once a month since we got it. (4 months)
It always checks out to be nothing of much significance, (or so they tell me).
The car runs, and has run perfectly since we got it. At this point I would like to disconnect the check engine light.
Taking the dash apart seems awfully drastic. My question, is there a way to disconnect the light from a remote location, other than behind the dash??
Thank you
Pete

Uh.....please dont. Sooner or later the lights gonna come on for a reason of some significance. Like when his fuel mileage dramatically drops, youll want to find out why. And as mentioned in a previous reply, more & more states are starting to fail smog tests just for a CEL on. Regardless of whether or not the bulb is plugged in. My advice is to invest in an inexpensive OBD-II code reader. Advance auto parts sells an ACTRON model & Wal-Mart sells an INNOVA model, both for approx $100. These can usually be used to diagnose most 1996 and newer vehicles, not just Volvo. Theyre easy to use, plus if you need help with a code you can post it here or on another site(volvospeed.com) and get advice that can potentially save you big $$$. Youll find Volvo has one of the more dedicated support communites online. Anyways, thats just my .02

Hi Pete,
Regarding your engine light: YOU DON'T WANT TO DISCONECT YOUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT! On our V40, a common "Check Engine" light is caused by the wife not putting the gas cap back on tight enough. In your case, you might want to make sure your cap is in good shape and not leaking.
You can purchase a device that you can plug into the OBDII plug and tell you what the problim might be and you can also reset the "Check Engine" light.

I just purchased a program and cable for my laptop that will do the same plus much more for about the same price.
Hope this helps,
Bob

If you live in a state with a smog inspection, it will not pass if the Check Engine light is disconnected.

Code readers have gotten pretty cheap. Kragen/Checker/Schucks sells a good one for $129 with a$30 rebate. With the code reader, you can find out for yourself why the light came on AND turn the light off.
