s40 fuel gauge question S40-V40

just purchased a used s40 for my wife with 85K. i read the fuel capacity to hold 16 gallons, but fuel gauge reads empty when there are at least 7-8 gallons left in the tank. the dealer says the tank or system needs to be recalibrated. what does this involve? anyone with similar issues? is it possible to do w/o a lot of equip?

I have the same issue with my 2000 V-40. My fuel warning light comes on at about 290 miles, if I fill it then it only will take around 12 gallons. I've always kind of doubted the manual was correct about the capacity.

I think it is a software download from Volvo. They will probably charge you for it though.

Why bother though ? you will never run out of fuel ! Probably not worth the hassle in my opinion. Mine has aprox. 5 gallons left when computer says 20 miles to empty.
