Timin belt chang on my '97 850 850 1997

Greetings,
Well, I have taken the plunge and started the timing belt change. I have been following the insructions on Bay 13. Currently, I have the serpentine belt off, the alingment marks on the cam pullies lined with the notch in the upper cover.
I noticed a lot of oil gunk in the area, but none on the timing belt. Now a bit of history. Recently, the car stated to use about a quart of oil every day. I replaced the (very cloged) flame trap, and the oil use stopped. I have not had to add oil in over a month. Okay, back to the present. Since the car is not using oil now, do I have to change the cam seals? Most of the oil gunk in toward the bottom of the car. Now, there is also a lot of oil on the outside of the timing belt cover also. I don't think I can remove the crank pully to change its' seal.
I plan to clean the area very well. If a seal is bad, will I be able to tell after cleaning, but without running the engine? Another thing, the new water pump I got has all it's "teeth", but the old one seems to be missing a few. What is the reason for the teeth issue?
I have not checked the tensioner or idler pullies, but I will.

    A quart a day is a very lot and suggests a badly leaking seal. I had a clogged flame trap which pushed oil mainly out the rear exhaust seal. The leak all but stopped after cleaning the flame trap but the seal was bad and after 6 months or so it became too much to deal with. On replacing this seal (easiest of all) the engine is so far dry everywhere (a few months) and not using too much oil. The seal was evidently original and was very stiff.

    If your situation with your car permits, you could replace the belt and watch for a few months, after cleaning everything very well. Should the seals leak sooner or later, you will be able to see this by removing the upper timing cover. At that time you would need to remove the belt but you would not need to remove it from the crankshaft pulley unless that turns out to be the source of the leak.

    It's hard to see how the belt would be dry and the outside of the timing cover oily if it is a seal leak, especially at a quart per day. Could the oil have come from somewhere else, like the oil separator or dipstick tube, and then splashed to the timing cover?

    Also do you mean your water pump pulley was actually missing a few teeth? Do you know if it was the original pump or at least an OEM part? If aftermarket that would certainly be a brand not to buy.

    For me the Bay13 instructions worked well. The only issue I had was keeping the belt tight enough to stay on the proper tooth of the crankshaft pulley while installing the tensioner. A strong bungee cord was needed. Also I could not get the water pump out or the new one in without removing the tensioner idler pulley from the block. Take off the entire pulley, not just the roller, because the bolt that holds the roller onto the arm is not captive.

      Hi Ksg,
      Did you install a new tensioner pulley? I tried to buy a new tensioner pulley at a local volvo part store, but they didn't have in-stock. I was told it never broke down over there. Anyway, I checked out the part price, $65 for a pulley (roller) only, $92 for a pulley (roller) and bracket together. FCPgroton sells a $92 tensioner pulley, and I simply asked the price when ordering something else. But, they sent me the tensioner pulley, and the part was made in Germany. It really looks like strong and I feel it can easily run until 210K miles. I am thinkg about returning this part since I didn't order it.

      Do you have any suggestions how you feel about the tensioner pulley? For the idler pulley, I simply want to install a new one since it's cheap (around $35). Thanks.

        I did not replace any part of the tensioner, pulley, arm or support bushing. I had my dealer parts person bring out a new assembly and it felt identical to my existing one as to lack of friction, amount of play, etc. The one on my car was made in Germany also. The bearing that keeps the tensioner roller is a sealed one which should not require attention. The arm is held to the block by a rollerbearing setup which I found dirty. I cleaned it with solvent and regreased it. No wear was evident to my eye. It's a little tight to get the assembly in and out unless you have a pretty stubby torx bit. I think the size was T45.

        The idler pulley seemed to move fine.

        The water pump which I replaced had much more friction than the new one, and some radial play. Previous experience with fanbelt driven water pumps told me these are bad signs.

      Most probably he got an aftermarket HEPU water pump which has gear teeth all around. A volvo OEM water pump has less teeth that looks like missing teeth.

        FYI: I replaced my water pump by a genuine OEM Volvo one which has gear teeth all around!!!! The original one was missing a tooth every 3 teeth if I remember correctly

        I bought my water pump from a Volvo dealer. It had all its teeth. It was made in the Czech Republic and looked in every way identical to the original. It included the gasket and 7 treated attachment bolts. I guess there may be more than one source that Volvo has used for its OEM water pumps.

      I am lucky....private guy in this area that only works on quality foreign cars. HIs rates far less than dealer. I had him do my timing belt belt and water pump...all for $300.

      If you can find trusty person with Volvo experience....I suggest you spend towing fee.....get it to someone that do full diagnosis
