Instrument lights coming on driving through puddles 850 1994

Well, I have a problem with my '94 850 sedan. Recently (6-8K miles) when driving through standing water, fast or slow (parking lot speeds), all the dash instrument lights come on as if the key is turned on while parked, but not started. The steering becomes tight and braking is difficult. This only lasts for about 1 to 2 seconds and I don't need to restart the car because it's still running. This is becoming alarming. Last week I look underneath the front of the car really well while changing the oil, and everything appeared intact including the splash pan. More recently, it doesn't really matter how slowly I drive through the parking lot and through the puddle, this happens. What do I look for next?

Thanks everyone.........

Thanks for responding. I bought the car a couple of years ago and the TB had been changed (I have the paperwork) but no indication that the drive belt had been done. A project for this weekend.

Thanks.

Have a close look at the power steering pump where the shaft exits the pump. It may be oiling the pulley which will work its way onto the belt. If there's oil on the pulley, you will be able to see/feel it.

Might help if you can start the car and get someone to sit inside while you spray some water around with a hose. You may be able to localize the problem.

Sounds like a classis case of wet serpentine belt. Is the belt in good shape on the friction side? Is it due for changing?
