15amp fuse in 10amp slot

So my cigarette lighter (accessory power) becomes inoperative due to the 10amp fuse opening. Perhaps this is due to playing a dvd movie and plugging power into the acc outlet (very rarely do I play dvd movies it the car), or pressing the cigarette lighter into the acc. outlet (for fun since I do not smoke.)

My solution to this is to put in a 15amp fuse for acc. outlet, but the label for fuse port 30 is clearly marked for 10amp. Will it hurt anything to have a higher rated fuse in there??

Thanks,

    15amp fuse in 10amp slot - wiring guidance/issues - decent site

Go here (http://www.kayjayco.com/techPractical.htm) to see a discussion on wire sizes/bundles vs. heat

This also appears to be a decent place to buy supplies.

15amp fuse in 10amp slot Bad idea!

    10 - 15 not a big deal!!!

That's 50% more than the designer & engineer want the wiring to bear.

Electric wiring is sized according to how much heat will be generated. The wire might be fine passing 15 amps in air all by itself. Put the same wire in a warm bundle (see how warn a cd gets in your player) and bad things can happen. A wiring harness for your brick probably costs about three grand! (plus labor)

I probably could come up with several more reasons not to put the bigger fuse in, like the insulation on your wires is getting old, etc.

If I wanted to play a DVD player that blew fuses, I would run a large, properly fused wire to an accessory lighter plug.

I am a firefighter, and I approved this message.

I would not increase the fuse size - in my view you'd be looking for trouble.

No accessory like a DVD player would draw anything near 10A unless it's a monster stereo, a very bright spotlight, etc. Occasionally a properly rated fuse or breaker will open randomly. If the 10A opens repeatedly, something is very likely wrong. Wire gauges and components are often closely calibrated to the circuit rating (fuse size). This is also true in house wiring. Ask a fireman.
