Bumper skirt info needed 850 1995

I saw a post on another site that said the back of the standard 850 lower bumper skirt has round outlines outboard of the (mostly) rectangular fog light openings. Can someone confirm this? I have an 854T (these lights may have only come on the T5 - I don't know) and I was going to repair a small but jagged hole in the skirt. If the regular skirt comes with the hole outlines, it will be easier to find a replacement skirt (and cut openings). Thanks in advance for any info. Don

Don--can't confirm that. I installed foglights on my 97 GLT wagon and I used the oval lines on the back side to cut the openings for the lights. I never saw any rectangular lines. As I recall, all factory fog lights are round, and cut into the oval opening lines imprinted in the bumper. If you see an 850 with square foglights, it's because somebody bought off market and didn't want to install them where indicated on the inside bumper. The only lights that will fit that oval configuration are the Bosch lights made for Volvo, and expensive. Hence the rectangular mounted lights closer inboard. Dick

Dick - I have confused the issue, I am afraid. On my car, there are two pairs of openings outboard of the large rectangular opening in the center. The inboard pair has black grills inserted, and are the ones I referred to as "mostly rectangular" (curved sides, though), to distinguish them from the far outside pair that I would call "round". I would say the mostly rectangular pair are about 5 to 6" wide, while the round ones are about 2-1/2" in diameter.

My lights go in the outside pair, which I call "round". The lenses, however, have a definite angular oval appearance with the spoiler removed. So, are the ones you cut the ones I call round? Sorry to pursue this further - just want to be sure. Don

Don--yes they are. The ones you want to cut are oval in appearance because the bumper at that point is slanted. Cutting out that oval isn't as easy as it looks. You think you can just grab your Bosh orbital jig saw and whack it out in an instant, but it won't cut all the way around because of the lips in the bumper. You have to finish up using one of those box knives you hijack airliners with. The bumper plastic will cut with the utility knife, but get one with a wide, hell-for-stout blade. The cheapo ones with the skinny blade will snap on you. I hope/assume you bought the Volvo/Bosch OEM lights which come with a little black plastic surround that hides the mistakes you made with the utility knife, as well as the relay and dash switch. Now getting that relay into the right slot under the dash is the real Sisyphusian task to installing fog lights on your 850. Taking the bumper off and cutting out the holes and installing the lights is baby shit compared to lying on your back under the dash trying to finger that little one-inch cube into a slot in the firewall on into a relay board you can't see. The OEM lights come with the little dash switch, and the car is prewired for it, so that's no problem. The switch goes into the first opening to the left of the wheel. Pop off the dummy cover and look behind it for the connector. It's been about five years since I installed the foglights on my 97 GLT, so forgive me if I miss a memory or two here. But getting that relay in under the dash is still vivid and crystal clear in my mind. You have to either remove the dash or a little wiring board underneath with a 10mm wrench and move it out of the way to get at that relay hole for inserting the relay.

and I will tell you a couple of things to make your life easier. Like, which wine to buy before you start! There are so many posts on the BB that I sometimes forget to scan down to ones I've replied to, to see if somebody has responded. Email is the best way to get hold of me, as I check it three or four times a day. Dick

OK Dick - thanks for the info. I have a stock 850 T5 that I ran into a trailer hitch a week ago. Ripped the bejesus out of the bumper cover, mangled the RF fender, and put a half-dollar sized gash in the spoiler/skirt. The fog lights are stock (already there) and what I am hoping to do now is replace the skirt with a regular 850 skirt (easier to find and maybe cheaper???), cutting the holes for the existing lights. Great tips - regards, Don
