Check Engine S70 1998

Is there a way to pull the codes without a dedicated code puller (OBD2)? I keep getting a check engine light that comes on under hard acceleration (T5) while the car misses and stumbles very slightly. Sometimes, the car misses/stumbles at idle too. It has 155K miles and has not had the plugs/wires/cap/rotor replaced in at least 120K miles (or ever). Thoughts on the stumbling/missing problem and how I might pull the codes?

Thanks. Jim B.

Even if you can't find somebody to read the codes for free, you can always go to an independent shop and pay them a couple of bucks for the five minutes or so it will take them to plug in the reader and write down the codes.
Get it done soon, and get online for the mantenance parts. The whole thing will cost less than the tow bill later if you don't do the maintenance now.

Yes, that's what I figured. Interestingly, When I yank the positive cable off the battery (and momentarily short to ground) and leave the cable off for about 5 minutes, the code gets cleared and the idiot light goes out. However, once the Check Engine light blinked about 6-8 times prior to staying on. Not sure what THAT meant but, again, I was able to clear this code. I'm pulling the plugs to check them out now.

Thanks for the assistance, all!

Jim B.

I think autozone will read your codes for free and you need to know what they are. I'm guessing your code(s) is probably a cylinder(s) misfire due to a bad plug(s) or wire(s). Yeah, you're overdo for a tuneup. Check FCPGroton.com for plugs, wire set plus a dist cap/rotor and new air filter. It'll make her run like new

No way around, you must use an OBDII scanner to read the codes.
Your car is way overdue for a major tuneup.
Plugs, spark plug wires, dist cap and rotor.
I'm willing to bet that this will cure your problem.
