A/C Possessed! 850

Recently had my a/c system recharged and a low pressure switch replaced. System was working awesome, was pumping out 38 degree air!

My wife took the car to the airport and parked it there last week when she went on a business trip. A few days later while she was driving home with her 2 friends, she called me complaining that it was 94 degrees out and the a/c was blowing warm. When she arrived home after 1.5 hours, I went out to check the car. Started her up, flipped on the a/c switch and heard the compressor immediately kick on, stayed on for several seconds as it should, and cycled off, then on for several seconds. All was normal. Took the car for a test drive and it seemed to be working fine. I cleaned out the temp sensors above the grab handles to see if that would help too. System was working fine.

Flash forward a few days, I left on a business trip with 2 co-workers. Drove the 850T Wagon from NJ to Maryland, about 4 hours, a/c worked well, then just as we were pulling into the hotel parking lot, she got humid and warm. The A/C didn't work for a few days after that, though I could hear the compressor cycling on and off, but staying on for many many seconds as it should, but no cold air. We left MD for NJ this afternoon, a/c was warm, then there would be a burst of cool, not cold, air, then back to warm for a minute or so, then a quick blast of cool, then warm, and on and on. After about an hour of driving, I noticed the cool air was now staying on, gradually it got colder and colder and for the last 3.5 hours of the trip, it was back to blowing ice cold air like being in a meat locker! Any ideas why the a/c system is doing this? Perhaps the compressor clutch is not operating correctly? Is there any other sensors that may be faulty and not trigerring the system to turn on and stay ob? Perhaps a bad climate control system? Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

A/C Possessed! 850

Hi,

I talked to my mechanic and will be bringing in my car on the 26th. I will follow-up on what is discovered and what the costs are.

I have the same problem and am getting it fixed when I find someone to take it to.
The ECC is open circuiting causing the A/C to turn off. When you get yours done or do it yourself, please give me an idea of what the cost was. I'm in California.

Looks like this has been answered here, just recently. Problem appears to be resolved by replacing faulty high/low pressure switches on the AC and/or adjusting the compressor cluch air gap, see the following:

Keith,

In the past week I started to have the same problem as you. Let me know if you find an answer. I'm fairly active on Volvospeed, and have been looking there, haven't found a solution yet.
