Removing Sensor Blower for Climate Control?????? V70-XC70

Does anyone know how to remove the sensor blower without damaging the dashboard? It's located to the right of the defogger button. There's a fragile sensor just infront of the 1/2 inch blower that makes it difficult to remove the lint and dust from the blower's impeller. I tried removing the bottom panel underneath the steering wheel and there's a steel knee bolster in the way. I tried removing the switch covers and the defogger switch but I'm still unable to access the little blower. Should I go at it from the center console? This would mean removing the climate control and radio.

There is enough crud on the blower to prevent the impeller from spinning intermittently. When this happens, the lights on the AC and Recirculation button are flashing after startup. I would take a thin dowel and turn the impeller by hand to free it up. I've already used a vacuum cleaner and compressed air.

Thanks,
Limon

on the 2001 v70 two sided CC there are two torx screws hidden under that strip of plastic with the sunglass holder. remove screws and then pull from the bottom. you do not have to remove any knobs, it all comes out as one.
BUT - if you disconnect the wire harness you will set an airbag code that will require a trip to the dealer. ask me how I know...
Also, it can be tricky to remove with the car in Park, it hits the handle

    Limon,

Remove the radio and climate control module.

Push in on the tabs on either side of the radio with a coin. They will pop out. Grasp them and pull the radio out. Disconnect the wiring.

Then reach up through the radio opening and push the tab on the bottom of the ECC module to release it and remove it as well.

You can easily access the fan/sensor through the opening. It turns 1/4 to release. Then you can disconnect its plug and remove it from the car for cleaning.

      Bryan,

Thanks for the instruction. I got the radio out, but I'm stuck trying to find that tab on the bottom of the ECC module. Is the tab part of the bottom of the ECC? I noticed a couple of narrow strips which are part of the bottom toward the driver side. One of the strips bow in when I push on it but the ECC still refuses budge when I'm pulling on it.

Be sure to disconnect the neg bat cable, if not you will get a air bag code.

        Limon,

You have the Electronic Climate Control (ECC), right? The control module should pop out without much effort.

If you have the manual climate control I don't know if there is a sensor behind that grille. Find out before you proceed.

The manual controller is removed by pulling off the L&R temperature dials and removing the screws behind them. Then you gently pry out the cover. To remove the rest of the unit you have to press in on the 4 tabs (each corner) and drop it down, disconnect the cables, and retrieve it through the radio opening.

        Limon,

I'll check the instructions in the Haynes Manual and get back to you ASAP.

Removing Sensor Blower for Climate Control?????? V70-XC70

          Brian,

I believe I have the ECC with left and right temperature knobs and fan speed slide lever that has an Auto setting. I don't believe you'll find the V70 in the Haynes manual since only the 850 manual is available here in the States.

Anyway, I will certainly remove the left and right temperature knobs to see if there are screws holding this thing in. It is really in there solidly. If there are screws holding this thing in place, that would explain it.

Thank goodness I didn't take a screwdriver to this thing. I'll tackle this and the upper strut mount this weekend. That clunking noise is annoying.

          Thanks,
          Limon

            Limon,

These instructions are from the S/V/C 70 manual. It is available in the U.S. from Haynes directly or IPD, among others.

You have the ECC. Don't remove the knobs--it isn't necessary.

I've removed the ECC and it really is easy. Don't be afraid to press and then push the unit out by placing your fingers behind it.

The instructions also suggest that the switch adjacent to the sensor be removed (by pushing it out from behind) for greater convenience.

            Keep us posted. Good luck,

            Bryan

              Bryan,

I did it and it's done. The ECC just needed some persuasion. What helped was that I used a artist's palette knife and slid the blade in between the lower bezel of the ECC and the center console. I was able to get the knife underneath the two tabs while pushing the unit behind. It finally came out.

I was able to remove the sensor blower by reaching through the radio opening then removed the wire connector and felt around the sensor until I found two "ears" on the barrel of the sensor. Pressing these ears, the sensor pulls right out. After some cleaning, it's working now.

              Thanks for help,
              Limon
