AC woes 850

Hi,
Not really a bid deal but my AC blows colder air when car is in transit/motion. Otherwise on a real hot day and stop and go traffic it's not that comfortable. I have to rev up gas in order for AC to blow cold air.
I bought those DIY add freon/with in line gauge things and i checked my low side port and read 45psi( real hot engine) but sometime it goes down to 25psi?
What could be the problem, should i add freon?
thanks again

Don't add more freon. 45 is the most you want. It sounds like the radiator fan is not turning on which could be a relay problem or a temp sensor.

      hi,
radiator fan operates normally as a matter of fact i thought that was the problem. will check on the temp sensor, is that by the grab handle? dunno how to go about it.
      thanks again

If you only get cold air when the car is moving, I still think that the radiator is not getting enough air forced through it. Revving up the engine will make the compressor turn faster and circulate more r134a through the system. The pocket data booklet says to rev the engine at 1500rpm for getting the coolest air, for what that means.
If it is really 104F (40C) in CA, then the best you can expect is about 70F degrees at the vents. Those northern climate guys at Volvo just don't know how to keep a car cool. But they are nice and toasty in the cold climates.

The cabin temp sensors are behind the grab handles. Use a small screw driver and pry the plastic cover off the ends from the top side. You will see a small grove at the top where the handle starts to go away from the side of the car. The plastic is attached at the bottom, like a hinge. Two 10mm bolts hold the handle in place. After the bolts are out, lift up on the handle and then pull straight out.
The square cover over the temp sensor just pulls straight out. Use a wet Q-tip to clean the very tiny sensor. Be careful not to bend anything.

          AC woes S70

          Klaus,
Are the cabin temp sensors in the same place on a 98 S70? I am having issues with the compressor on my S70 not engaging. I have checked all the fuses for the A/C and the relay in the engine compartment they check out fine. When I jump the contacts for the relay the compressor pulls in, cold air flows. I do not get any voltage to the relay coil. I have a Haynes manual for the 850, but it is very simple. I am trying to locate the sensors to inspect. Any help would be appreciated.

          hey Klaus,
Will do the grab handles afterwards will move the 2 horns away allowing more air for the radiator, hopefully my AC would perform better on idling mode,
          thanks again!!

After you move the horns, let us know if that helps... in a new post. The engine bay on my 95 gets too hot in city traffic, and the high pressure side of the ac never gets cold enough to cool the cabin.

Yesterday, the air temp displayed on the dash was 120F at idle. If you take the Volvo pocket guide guidelines and subtract 40F from 120F, the dash vent can only cool to 80F! Not enough to cool the cabin. I suspect the engine fan doesn't blow hard enough to dissipate the heat from the exhaust manifold area, plus trying to cool the water, oil, tranny fluid, and the r143a all at the same time.

hello, MIne is similar but oposite. I have the same gauge readings, but mine is ice cold at idle and then when the car heats up or increased rpms the temp coming out of the vents go up.
      Thanks
      Dennis
