Door brake repair costs??? V70-XC70 1998

Does anyone have any idea how hard or how much it costs to fix the driver's side door brake that holds it in place when open. I heard the crack inside the door today and it was the same sound as my BMW so I know what the problem is.

check it carefully...this is a common problem on the 850's and could also happen to our cars...I'm talking about the actual weld in the car-side door strap (not the door side) of the hinge. You'll have to peel the rubber surround/moulding back off of the hinge to actually see what I'm talking about. If this has happened the you're talking about having to have it re-welded, or another somewhat difficult fix documented on an Aussie 850 site. Here's a link to that: http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/doorstraps.html

I've done this procedure on my S70. It took about an hour, including removal and reinstallation of the door. Don't let that last part scare you -- removal and installation is conceptually very easy, as Volvo designed these doors with guide pins that require no realignment after removal and reinstallation. You will need a helper to get the door back on the pins, and one of the two of you will have to be strong enough to hold the door up while the other guides the front of the door back onto the pins. Another helper yet -- three people in total -- or a floor jack with padding might ease the strain on your arms, but isn't absolutely necessary.
