Flame Trap 850

I recently finished school and have begun to take care of as much routine maintenance as i can on my 93 850. I was looking through some old repair records and found that my mechanic would replace the PCV occasionally. How often should i check the flame trap and replace it and when checking what am i looking for?

Thanks

Jon

The large hose connected to it has a factory crimped clamp. It's easier to just cut this and remove the whole elbow piece. Replace it with a normal hose clamp. The small vacuum line fitting is usually plugged with hard cabonlike material that needs to be drilled out.

It's located in the air intake elbow just before the throttle body. It's on the back side so is kinda a pain to get to. Check volvospeed.com (bay 13) for pics of the procedure to clean it

I've seen the instructions on bay 13, i'm just wondering how often it needs to be checked/cleaned/replaced?

If you don't know when last changed do it now to avoid any of the blown seals that result when one gets clogged.

I do mine about every 25-30k miles. It is part of the changing plug, dist cap & rotor tune up for me. Fairly easy to do as long as you have that stuff out of the way.
