Auto Insurance in Ontario

So, now that we are back home, I'm finding some things have changed in the past 5 years! Our previous insurance company (Liberty Mutual) is now TD Canada Trust, and the quotes I have got so far are VERY expensive!

While in California for 5 years, we did have some claims:
1. in 2002 car totalled by drunk driver running stop sign (100% other driver's fault)
2. in 2003 a rock fell on our windshield and we had it replaced... $250 deductible on $400 glass
3. in 2004 fender-bender in private parking lot which was "considered" 100% my fault (of course I think it was not) by insurance b/c I was in reverse at the time. There was no visible damage to either car but other guy later claimed $499 in damage (!!) Rates did not go up then but apparently trashing our good rate now that we have to change companies.

We've both been driving and continuously insured since 1990 (in Ontario 1990-2000 and USA 2000-2005). Car is a 1998 S70. In CA we were paying $65 a month for full Comprehensive with low deductibles.

No tickets or convictions including for any of the above.

Anyone have any recommended companies? Student discounts? Volvo discounts?

    Tina:

I ran into the same thing when I moved to ON from Halifax. At the time I was carrying a non-fault accident from when I lived in Ohio (other party refused to pay despite being the one that ran the light - no witnesses and no citations) and a couple of windshield claims. Pilot Ins. was the cheapest my broker could find. In any case, I just got my next renewal with Pilot, despite two late 90's Volvos (and a '99 VW diesel for my 23 year old son) and clean records all the way around, my premium is $3400/yr. I know when I was in Ohio with similiar circumstances with my other son driving and newer cars (for the time) my premiums were way less. Unforunately, I chalk it up to the fact that there just isn't the level of competition in the Ontario market, they have that funky semi no-fault thing going, and compared to NS, ON drivers aren't that talented. But I sure would suggest that you shop it around as Volvos are about as cheap a car to insure as there is (compared to Mercedes, VW, BMW and Jag which were the other makes I considered at various times).

    Good luck,

    Hi Tina,
One question - Is it necessary to report claims out-of-country?
(I would think that your Cdn driving record 1990-2000 would be all that
should apply if being insured by a Canadian carrier, especially if you have a
previously claim-free record & particularily since we changed to "no-fault" a
few years ago which jacked up everyones personal rates.)
One recommendation - Use a broker, let them do your rate shopping for you.
    Good luck,
    Armie

Yes I have been required to provide letters from the USA insurance companies with claims histories by 3 of the companies I have contacted for quotes. I just got the lowest quote for $89 a month but that's with $1000 deductible on comprehensive.

No fault insurance is a scam that only benefits the insurance companies (thanks Mike Harris for your legacy), and I know we are being penalized for the claims we made in the USA including one that was an act of nature and one that was 100% fault of a drunk driver running a stop sign!

Where can I find a broker? Any online? I don't even have a telephone book yet as we just moved in :)
