Finally fixed niggling A/C Problem '95 850 Turbo Wagon 850 1995

So, here it goes....A/C would work for about 25 min, then the compressor would stop. I tried to charge it my self and it seemed to keep doing the same thing. Compressor would go for a while, then the pressure would drop below 26lbs on the low side and the thing would compress, stop, compress, stop.

So, I brought it to a local shop thinking that the compressor was toast, or better, there was some moisture in the lines. I had them evacuate and recharge the thing. got a call from the shop saying "come pick up your car with COLD A/C".

I figure, cool, fixed for a hundred bux. So, that night, we went for a ride and about 40 min. in, the heavy, humid air starts coming in the car again. Damn...the thing is not working.

So, I brought it home and checked for codes. I got a 414, drivers side airflow sensor fan stalled. So, I popped the cover on the sensor (underneath the "oh, crap" handle above the driver's head) and put a flashlight in there. Sure enough, the thing had ingested enough crap over the years to knit a sock.

Out comes the Sears Craftsman 900hp shopvac. I put the "car cleaning" head onthe hose and cranked it up. At this point, I didn't care if the thing spit a code for reverse voltage or whatever...I'd had enough! I sucked the life out of that thing. then, I turned on the car and A/C. Well, wouldn't you know it...the damned thing works! So, after driving for a week, the A/C has not exhibited the problem again! I also am getting no codes. It seems that the sensor was causing such a problem that the A/C computer would just shut itself down.

Anyone else run into this?

AJ

Finally fixed niggling A/C Problem '95 850 Turbo Wagon 850 1995

well, after the posts regarding starting/stopping of AC, i decided to 'clean' my fan area. Discovered that the little 'reddish' thing in there was/is a thermistor or similar. i say was because i appear to have damaged it while trying to manually remove the lint etc. my vac. would not pull the debris out. Needless to say i now have the flashing AC & Recirc lamps flashing for a few seconds upon startup. One of my fans was not spinning prior to the 'cleanout'.

My problem is that when the car is quite hot and hasn't run for long, an AC fan speed of 50% or higher will shutdown the fan completely after about 3-4 min. of running at this speed. i need to shutdown the engine and restart in order for the AC to work properly again. During this shutdown period, the compressor continues to cycle as normal. strange !

A/C Problem '94 850 sedan 850 1994

I have had a similar problem with my 850 for several years, sounds just like your problem. Dealer has been unable to solve the problem but has been willing to take my money on several occasions. Do you know where to find the airflow sensor on an 850 sedan?

The cabin temperature sensor fans are located above the grab handles on both the passenger side and the driver's side ceiling grab handles. This is a very common problem code with the 850's of all years, wagons and sedans alike. You should stick the vacuum hose up to these inlets everytime you vacuum your car.

I will try to clean the sensor. One indy shop thought my sensor was working fine. That was the first time I found out that there was a sensor located where you described.
