Michelin oversize HydroEdge tires on an R wagon--stupid choice? 850

The ride in my 97 R wagon is a bit harsh. I would like something softer, so I'm opting for 16 inch Columbia rims. My tire of choice is Michelin's HyroEdge, with its 90K warranty, a top ten rating for wet (I live in Oregon in the Willamette Valley which is wet 360 days out of the year), and a ten rating for quiet. I love my peace, conversation and music while I'm driving. The tire specified for the 97 R wagon in a 16-inch is a 205/50/R16. In the HydroEdge Michelin only offers a 205/55/16. I'm not in to speed or performance, and I love most off a nice quiet soft ride. Will the 205/55/R16 work on my R wagon, considering all things like traction control, ABS, etc., or should I forget it? I know the slightly larger 55 will affect my odometer, but I can live with that. But are there other considerations I haven't thought of, like the larger tire rubbing in the fender well, etc.

If the answer is no, I shouldn't consider it, could someone tell me what else I should be looking at? I've looked at the Michelin Pilot, but Michelin doesn't give any kind of mileage warranty on the Pilot--as opposed to 90K on the HydroEdge--and says nothing about wet road handling, which is the major consideration in this part of the world. 55's mounted on my stock Turbo 16" wheels did rub the rubber off the wheel well...yes mainly in tight turns. I've have never used under a Z rated.

I have the Michelin Hydroedge on a '92 965 and a '99 S70 T5--fairly quiet, and no complaints on either wet or dry pavement. Can't speak to the oversize issue, tho.

Should be just fine. The Columba rims and the 55's will result in the desired ride and water evacuation. Just be sure to clean the brake dust off the rim finish about every two weeks (particularily the fronts.)

    1. The 55 might rub at full lock, otherwise it will be ok.

    2. You won't like the Pilot, they are stiff, hard and grab like crazy (I have these and like them a lot). Given your stated priorities, the Hydros sound like a good choice.

    Good luck.

I have a 95 855t and i run a 205/55/16 it only rubs at full lock never while i am just driving on the road, only like in the driveway. Also are you interested in selling your r rims if so which are they pegs, volans???

      Thanks
      Ben
