2000 V70 Transmission Failure at 100,000 miles V70-XC70 2000

Just thought I'd inquire if other V70 owners have had a similar experience.

We have a 2000 V70 with automatic transmission. Last week with just over 100,000 miles on the car the transmission without much warning lunched itself. We have owned the car since it was new and had the transmission fluid serviced by our Volvo dealer at about 60,000 when we noticed the transmission shifted hard between gears. Changing the fluid smoothed out the hard shifts and all seemed well until last week.

The dealer quoted $3900 USD for a replacement transmission. I was able to locate a used transmission at a salvage yard for $600 plus shipping and it looks like 10.5 hours labor to do the swap. By the time I'm done I figure it will cost me close to $1500 USD.

Needless to say I'm very disappointed in the reliablilty of this car and only hope that for some reason my faulty transmission is an outlier. I would be

    2000 V70 Transmission Failure at 100,000 miles V70-XC70 2000

If yours is an outlier, then I am out on the curve with you, too.

I had a similar out-of-the-blue failure in my 98 V70XC. That died at 76,000 miles. My VIP warranty expired at 74,000. Ouch. Changing the tranny fluid didn't save me a failure.

My problem was NOT the PNP switch, but an internal failure to the transmission. Dealer wanted $3,000 to replace. I couldn't find a junkyard one. Eventually got the transmission rebuilt at a tranny shop for $2,300. Ouch.

This failure really shook my faith in the Volvo (it was 2 years ago). Then, one year later the angle gear died (part of the AWD system). That cost $1,700 to replace (and we had to wait a month for the parts!).

End result: we unloaded the Volvo, got a Honda Pilot, and kissed reliability problems goodbye!

    Good luck.
