My '99 S80 2.9 died on me. Any ideas? S80 1999

Hi All,

While driving back from the airport yesterday my car died on me; like someone pulled the plug from the engine. I had it in cruise control when going down a hill about 70 MPH, it lost power; the panel lit up like a Christmas tree and then the engine died. I still had lights though. The car would turn over, but then it would not start. The engine tried to start, but it would hesitate and die again. The only warning light that was on was the check engine light.

I had the car towed, and upone getting it off the truck, it started right up, with no problems. I drove it 30 miles to work today like nothing happened. It just turned 80k miles.

Anyone have an idea why this happened?

You might drop by an Auto Zone and have them check it with the OBDII tool. It will read any error codes stored in your computer. If there is an error code, then you might know what happened. I have seen this happen when a fuel filter had become corrupted and failed to pass fuel. After setting for a while the offending matter settles to the bottom and it works OK again - for a while. If you don't know if the filter has been replaced, it is time to do so!! Generally it should be replaced about every 25k miles.

Well, I dropped by Auto Zone today, but they couldn't find anything. My check engine light hasn't been on since my car shut down. Nobody can put a finger on it.

I might just have to take it to the Volvo shop and have them go over it completely.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for helping.

Thanks for the quick response! Come to think of it, the car acted like it was starved of fuel. I was planning on having the car checked out with the diagnostics tool, so I'll be sure to do that soon. I had the 60k service done in August of last year, but I'm not sure if the filter was replaced. I'll ask tomorrow.

Thanks again!
